Hotels using Aven Hospitality's Booking Engine can now offer guests a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) option at checkout, following the go-live of a previously announced integration with HTS (Hopper Technology Solutions). The feature appears as an optional add-on immediately after room selection, allowing guests to cancel before check-in and receive up to 100% of their room cost back — for any reason, through the hotel's direct website or confirmation email.
How the Integration Works
HTS manages the end-to-end process automatically: cancelling the reservation in the property's PMS, refunding the guest to their original payment method, and releasing the room for resale in real time. Hotels do not need to modify existing rates, cancellation policies, or their existing tech stack to enable the product. Aven's Booking Engine — which powers distribution and commerce for more than 35,000 hotels across 190-plus countries through its SynXis platform and 600-plus integrations — makes CFAR available to that entire footprint on a turnkey basis.
The commercial case for embedding flexible cancellation into the direct booking channel is substantive. HTS-commissioned survey data from Opinium, based on a nationally representative sample of more than 1,000 recent U.S. travelers, found that 87% of guests rate the ability to cancel as important and 62% say they would likely add a CFAR option if it appeared at checkout. HTS reports that the product carries a 95% customer satisfaction rating, an 80%-plus repeat purchase rate, and that 98% of CFAR cancellations are handled fully self-serve — figures that translate directly into lower servicing costs for hotel operations teams.
Direct-Channel Revenue Angle
"Guests want the ability to choose the level of refundability that fits their trip," said Colin Whitney, VP of Product, Flexibility at HTS. "When flexibility can be offered seamlessly and delivered in real-time, it builds both loyalty and trust in the brand — which is exactly why Cancel for Any Reason consistently earns a 95% customer satisfaction rating." Geoff Fischer, Director of Product Management for Aven's direct distribution portfolio, framed the integration as an incremental profit driver for the direct channel, noting that it improves conversion without requiring rate changes or additional operational resources from hotel teams.
The move fits a broader industry push to load the direct booking channel with ancillary fintech products that OTAs have long used as differentiation levers. Flexible rate products, price-freeze options, and CFAR coverage have historically been OTA-native features; platforms like HTS are now packaging them as API-accessible SaaS modules that independent booking engines and channel managers can embed natively. For hoteliers already investing in direct-channel strategies to reduce OTA take rates, a self-service cancellation product with high guest satisfaction scores is a meaningful conversion tool — particularly as revenue management teams look to capture demand from price-sensitive travelers without discounting room rates. Coverage of related hotel-tech distribution strategies and loyalty and guest-experience platforms on Hospitality Tech News underscores how broadly operators are rethinking the direct booking stack.
With the Aven integration now live, HTS says global hotel partners can activate CFAR immediately through their existing Booking Engine setup.
