Hospitality veterans Alex Cabañas, Burt Cabañas, and Kirk Jones have launched Astound Ventures, a collaborative investment fund targeting up to 20 companies over three years that can demonstrably improve what the fund calls net unit margin — "NUM" — for hotel owners, operators, and brands. The Texas-based vehicle is raising exclusively from industry participants, with more than $8 million committed toward a $30 million initial close.
Alex Cabañas, who serves as CEO of Astound and executive chairman of Pyramid Global Hospitality, framed the fund's thesis around a structural gap in how hospitality technology gets built and adopted. "The hospitality industry shouldn't wait for Silicon Valley to solve hospitality's problems," he said. "The people closest to those problems should be the ones building and investing in the solutions." Burt Cabañas, founder and chairman of Benchmark Resorts & Hotels and co-chairman of Pyramid, serves as Astound's chairman. CFO Kirk Jones brings prior finance leadership from Benchmark and Capella Hotels.
The Portfolio So Far
Astound has already seeded 10 companies spanning a deliberately broad operator-impact mandate. Technology investments include a purpose-built mobile point-of-sale platform, a wireless open-source energy management system, and technology enabling autonomous travel. The fund has also backed sustainable tissue solutions, heated outdoor furniture, and multiple travel management and meetings-focused platforms. The variety is intentional: Astound defines scope not as "tech" but as any product, service, or innovation that moves the NUM needle for real estate owners.
Portfolio company feedback underscores the fund's strategic-access value proposition. Ludovic Siouffi, co-founder and CEO of Fox Fold Products, credited Astound with compressing years of credibility-building into weeks by connecting his team directly with hotel management company CEOs and ownership groups. Kevin Long, founder and CEO of Outmore Living, said the fund's network translated into qualified leads and faster deal velocity beyond the capital itself.
Operator Network as Moat
Running parallel to the fund is Astound Collaborators, a global network of real estate owners, hotel brand executives, and management company leaders assembled through more than 300 one-on-one industry conversations over the past year. Cabañas described the network as a structural advantage over conventional venture approaches: owners embedded at the ground level reduce wasted pilot cycles, accelerate scaling decisions, and provide real-time product feedback that institutional allocators cannot replicate. The fund plans to engage more than 100 solution providers as part of its sourcing pipeline.
The launch arrives as the broader hospitality technology investment landscape increasingly prizes operator-led vehicles over generalist VC. With AI poised to reshape revenue management, distribution, and labor scheduling across the industry, Astound's leadership argues that domain-native investors with direct operator relationships are better positioned to identify, de-risk, and scale solutions than funds operating at arm's length from hotel P&Ls. "If we don't improve NUM, everyone in our ecosystem suffers," Cabañas said. "We are searching for workhorses, not unicorns."
